Answer

SCV server sends email notifications.

SMTP server needs to be reachable from SCV server via specified port. Otherwise, TEST EMAIL SETTINGS  fails by the following error.

  • Failed to send email: Couldn't connect to host, port: <SMTP_SERVER>, <SMTP_PORT>; timeout -1
  • Failed to send email: Could not connect to SMTP host: <SMTP_SERVER>, port:<SMTP_PORT>

Note: vCenter Server does not communicate with specified SMTP server
