Volume shadow copies on SQL transaction log volume causing SQL Server go offline

Extensive use of the SQL VSS Agent during backups.
Volume shadow copies on SQL transaction log volume filled the volume causing the volume to go offline, SQL Server crash, and the 'SqlServerWriter' to be left in a failed state.
