SCO delete clone fails with ORA-15177 and ASMFD

Issue

When attempting to delete a database clone using the SnapCenter Oracle Plug-in in an Oracle RAC/ASM environment, the Delete Clone workflow fails reproducibly. This results in jobs remaining indefinitely in a “Running” state, with ONTAP volumes and virtual disks left stranded and not cleaned up. The issue was observed on jobs such as 15366 and 18703.

Log Output and Symptoms:

  • SnapCenter job status: Delete Clone status Running not supported
  • UI and Cancel-SmJob (PowerShell) refuse to cancel the job
  • Stop-SmJob can clear the job in some cases, but not always
  • Manual cleanup of ASM, VM, and ONTAP resources required
  • ASM errors in logs, including:
    ORA-15177: cannot operate on system aliasesORA-15032: not all alterations performedASMCMD-9514: ASM disk label clear operation failedNullPointerException in ClusterDatabaseService.removeSrvctlDatabase
  • ASMFD disk unlabeling fails for multiple disks after retries
  • Impact: VM disk count abnormally high (e.g., 109 vs. normal 45), stranded ONTAP volumes, and stuck jobs
