Issue

  • After after upgrading ONTAP to 9.13.1 or higher, SnapCenter backup and verification jobs are failed due to a snapshot retention issue.
  • Snapshot retention is failing due to the snapshots being in a busy/locked status.
  • The error can be seen in the SMCore_XXX.log of the backup job:

Activity 'Registering Backup and Applying Retention' failed with error: Retention : Error: Remove Snapshot '<snapshot_name>' failed on volume '<volume_name>'.
Snapshot copy "<snapshot_name>" of volume "<volume_name>" in Vserver "<SVM_name>" has not expired or is locked. Use the "snapshot show -fields owners, expiry-time, snaplock-expiry-time" command to view the expiry and lock status of the Snapshot copy.
. Error: Remove Snapshot '<snapshot_name>' failed on volume '<volume_name>'.
