SnapManager for Hyper-V unable to restore Virtual Machine in Hyper-V server 2016

  • Hyper-V server 2016 or higher upgraded in-place from Server 2012R2
  • SnapManager for Hyper-V

Issue

 Cannot restore Hyper-V 2016 server (or higher) VM from backups. When trying to restore a VM the job fails and the VM enters saved state.  

This is accompanied by SMHV restore report error:
 
  Restoring VM files...
  Failed to restore VM files.SDSnapshotRestore failed
  Restore task: failed to complete
  An error occured while performing the VM restore.
  An error occured while executing the restore operation.
  Failed to restore VM files.SDSnapshotRestore failed
  An error occured while processing the recovery.
  Failed to restore VM files.SDSnapshotRestore failed. [Error Code: -2147467259]


Accompanying SnapDrive snpdrvdbg.log shows errors like the following:
  File missing in snapshot < \?\C:\ProgramData\NetApp\SnapDrive\SDWFLR\28731c04-62d2-4711-9eb9-93d9146d0a48-0\sdq-vmm\SDQ-VMM\Virtual Machines\E4FAC017-A528-47AF-9C02-0F6EB5A0239F.VMRS >. Cannot restore a file not present in snapshot

  Invalid input file specification for file level restore. Check help for more info.HRESULT 0xc0041048.
