SMSQL backup verification fails with the error "An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding."

Issue

SMSQL backup verification operation times out after 3 hours, which fails with the following error.

Example:

[SQL SMO Error]: An exception occurred while executing a Transact-SQL statement or batch. Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding.
