SMO Backup fails with a NullPointerException after database and filesystem discovery

Issue

During the initial phases of the Backup, the process fails with a java NullPointerException:
 
[RMI TCP Connection(2)-<IP_ADDR>] [ERROR]: SMO-13032: Cannot perform operation: Backup Create.
