How to address Common VSS errors from failed SnapManager for Exchange backups

Description

VSS refers to the Microsoft Volume Shadow copy Service (VSS), which facilitates a snapshot-based backup that is used by the NetApp SnapManager family of backup products. Below are some of the most common VSS errors that are associated with SnapManager for Exchange (SME) backup failures:

  • VSS_E_UNEXPECTED_PROVIDER_ERROR
  • VSS_E_HOLD_WRITES_TIMEOUT
  • VSS_E_WRITER_INFRASTRUCTURE
  • VSS_E_WRITERERROR_RETRYABLE
  • VSS_E_PROVIDER_VETO
  • VSS_E_VOLUME_NOT_SUPPORTED
  • VSS_E_VOLUME_NOT_SUPPORTED_BY_PROVIDER
  • VSS_E_FLUSH_WRITES_TIMEOUT

SnapManager for Exchange (SME) fails to perform Microsoft Exchange VSS backup.

When performing Microsoft Exchange storage groups backup, the backup fails with some events logged under application in the event viewer:
