Accessing SMO remotely fails with "Cannot connect to SnapManager server"

Issue
When running any smo or smsap command on a remote server, an error message similar to the following is displayed:
[ERROR] SMO-01104: Error invoking command:
SMO-01111: Cannot connect to SnapManager server "https://<SERVER>:27214/smo_v9/services/SMO".
Please ensure the SnapManager server process is started on the database host "<SERVER>/<IP-ADDR>" on port 27214
