How are license keys installed?
License keys are typically installed by NetApp prior to delivering the product to the user. For add-on software (purchased for an existing system), license keys must be installed on-site by a user. License keys can be installed using the Data ONTAP CLI or using management software (for example, OnCommand System Manager 2.x).
The tables below are based on currently sold licensed products, and identify the license key that must be installed in order to use specific products.
How do I determine which license keys to use?
Data ONTAP 8.1 release family license key usage varies based on the platform. The tables below identify whether a key is needed for a given product on a given platform. Typically, each license key unlocks a single product (for example, FlexClone). However, in some cases, a single license key may unlock multiple products (for example, in Data ONTAP 8.1 the SnapManager for Exchange license key unlocks all products in the SnapManager Suite - which is a change from Data ONTAP 8.0, where each SnapManager required its own license key - as shown in Table 3, below).

Where can I find the license keys?
Go to the NetApp Support Site and click Products > Software Licenses. Search by Controller Serial Number to find keys related to a specific system, or by Sales Order to find all keys for an order. Other search parameters are supported, as well. In some instances, license keys might be located on the Master License Keys page under Downloads > Software, also on the NetApp Support Site.
Does NetApp provide a single license key for products that include multiple software components or is a key provided for each component?
NetApp typically provides a key for each component, but the licensing functionality in Data ONTAP allows a single key to unlock multiple components (for example, SnapManager Exchange license key unlocks all components in the SnapManager Suite). Refer to the tables above to see which license key unlocks all components of a particular offering.
What are the requirements prior to upgrading to the Data ONTAP 8.1 7-Mode release family?
Some products changed their license key needs from 8.0 to 8.1 and require specific keys to be present in 8.0 prior to upgrading in order for the 8.1 upgrade to succeed. Specifically, for upgrading any SnapManager products, ensure the SnapManager for Exchange license key is installed prior to upgrading; this will enable all SnapManagers in 8.1 after the upgrade. For upgrading SnapVault, ensure the SnapVault Secondary license key is installed in 8.0 prior to upgrading; this will enable both SnapVault products in 8.1. To ensure a successful upgrade of all features, it is recommended to install all of the keys.
