Network Time Protocol (NTP)
Answer
The NTP services for a CVO cluster are done in the back end by the cloud provider, then provided through the respective networking that is provided to the VM instances. Their settings and methodology are not directly visible to the CVO cluster.
Additional details:
Q1) How do we know what the NTP servers are, i.e. NIST, etc.?
A1) What is actually being used for the source of the NTP is defined by the cloud provider. Only the respective provider can reveal the actual servers being used.
Q2) Is it recommended to set an NTP server on a CVO, like with an on-prem cluster?
A2) The recommendation is to allow the defaults to be used for NTP services as they are automatically provided by the cloud provider to the CVO directly.
Q3) Is there a way to add an additional NTP server using BlueXP?
A3) Only if you are creating a CIFS server and want an external time server. Referencing the Cloud Volumes ONTAP documentation:
- Step 4, b. Protocol section; then select CIFS. You have to use your configured AD DNS.
- If a source other than the configured AD DNS is desired, then this can be done using the BlueXP API (see the ‘Setup NTP server’ for the respective cloud provider).
