Answer

Backup retention is managed/operated by ONTAP, it uses the same replication engine as SnapMirror (LRSE - Logical Replication with Storage Efficiency), and that mechanism is what ages off older backups when an SnapMirror update is executed. When you break a relationship, ONTAP can't update the relationship backup retention.

The removal of any backups would therefore need be done manually.

Any backups remaining in S3 would still incur charges.
