Answer

Applicable in both ONTAP versions:

  • This is normal behavior, root aggregate comes with 95% utilization after its creation, because the root volume is thick provisioned.

Data ONTAP 8 only:

ONTAP 9

Additional Information

Root volume size should not be re-sized bellow the min size allowed per platform + ONTAP version. Check Hardware Universe to see min root vol size for your platform + ONTAP version.
