SnapMirror update or Volume move operation fails with error: The primary volume has a file/LUN which exceeds the maximum file/LUN size destination can support

Issue

  • SnapMirror or Volume move transfer fails
    • An affected volume move (vol move) will remain in preparing transfer status for an extended period, making no apparent progress
    • vol move -instance output will display dash "-" for Estimated Time of Completion, Percentage Complete, and Replication Throughput
    • An affected SnapMirror will display the error (Failed to start transfer. (The primary volume has a file/LUN which exceeds the maximum file/LUN size destination can support.))
  • For both vol move and SnapMirror operations affected by the issue, MGWD log will contain the message:
The primary volume has a file/LUN which exceeds the maximum file/LUN size destination can support
  • This issue typically occurs after upgrade to ONTAP 9.8
