SMSQL backup fails with error SnapDrive was unable to create a Snapshot copy of one or more LUNs

Issue

  • Backup fails with error in the SMSQL job report:

Failed with error code 0xc0040850.
Error : Failed to create snapshot [<instance_name> : admin].
Error Details: [SnapDrive Error]: SnapDrive was unable to create a Snapshot copy of one or more LUNs that reside on different storage system volumes. All Snapshot copies that were created as part of this LUN Snapshot copy operation were deleted. Please check the application event log for more details.

  • First error seen in the Application Event logs on the SMSQL server:

    Failed to create snapshot of volume <volume_name> reason: cannot exceed maximum number of snapshot copies
