During ONTAP upgrades VDI users cannot access ONTAP over CIFS

  • ONTAP 9
  • All Flash FAS (AFF)
  • ONTAP upgrades
  • Security Daemon (secd, or the ONTAP CIFS authentication process)
  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI)

Issue

  • Users report losing access to the VDI profile files, or other data on the affected volumes
  • The ONTAP node's D-Blade (Data Processing) latency averages around 400 ms for an hour when it normally would be less than 10 ms
    • CPU is also abnormally higher at this time
  • The throughput abnormally drops to 0 Bytes/second multiple times in the same period 
  • Connecting to the ONTAP node cluster shell via SSH fails or times out and require a reboot from the SP/BMC to recover
  • From AutoSupports or event log show, secd becomes unresponsive
