After migration, CIFS is inaccessible using DNS name (IP address works)

Issue

  • There is migration from and an old to new ONTAP storage system
  • DNS configuration is changed so that the original name maps to an IP address of a CIFS SVM data LIF
  • On attempting to access the CIFS server, there is a hang and timeout followed by a generic network path not found error
  • Connecting to CIFS server using the IP address works
  • The DNS name resolves successfully with no name resolution issues found
  • Logging on and off, clearing DNS cache, or rebooting the client does not help
