Answer

These two ONTAP options affect snapshot directory access differently:

  • CIFS share property showsnapshot:

SMB Find requests are affected by this share property. If the CIFS client simply tries to change directories to the snapshot directory, ONTAP will allow access even if the share property is not set, as long as the volume option -snapdir-access is set to "true".

  • Volume option -snapdir-access:

When set to "true" (default), CIFS clients can access the snapshot directory. When set to "false", snapshot directory access is disabled.

Note: this option also affects whether snapshots are available via the "Previous Versions" tab.
