vSphere client shows lower than expected used capacity for Thick-Provisioned VMDK on NetApp NFS datastore

Issue

  • In the vSphere client datastore view, discrepancies in the “Used capacity” for certain virtual machines.
  • The disks of the three virtual machines are thick provisioned (Lazy Zeroed).
  • The usage shown in File Explorer is roughly the same (147 GB).
  • However, when looking at the datastore in vSphere client, the Used capacity appears as shown only XXX14 is displayed with an unusually small value.

  • Physical usage with du in the ONTAP node shell (for each VM individually), that the XXX14-flat.vmdk file itself is smaller than the other two.
