Windows iSCSI path loss during ONTAP multi-hop upgrade

Issue

  • During a multi-hop ONTAP upgrade (ONTAP 9.7 → ONTAP 9.8 → ONTAP 9.11.1), Windows clients connected via iSCSI experienced simultaneous loss of all MPIO paths.
  • After node failover/giveback and LIF down/up , only one iSCSI path recovered automatically.
  • Full redundancy was restored only after a Windows host reboot.
  • Windows event logs showed disk removal and delayed write errors.
  • ONTAP ems logs (iscsi.notice) for affected initiator IQNs appeared with delay compared to other clients.
