Answer

  • When you create an ONTAP S3 bucket, ONTAP automatically provisions a FlexGroup volume in the background.
  • This volume is created with a threshold slightly higher than the bucket size to accommodate metadata and overhead.
  • Since FlexGroup volumes distribute data across multiple aggregates, the available capacity depends on the free space in those aggregates.
    • For example:
    • Bucket size: 90TB
    • Aggregates:
      • aggr1: 33TB free
      • aggr2: 34TB free
      • Total available space: 77TB
  • This explains why the volume shows only 77TB instead of the full 90TB.
  • The volume size reflects the actual usable capacity across the aggregates, not just the bucket configuration.
