Why does the ONTAP S3 volume show less capacity than the bucket size

- Ontap S3
Answer
- When you create an ONTAP S3 bucket, ONTAP automatically provisions a FlexGroup volume in the background.
- This volume is created with a threshold slightly higher than the bucket size to accommodate metadata and overhead.
- Since FlexGroup volumes distribute data across multiple aggregates, the available capacity depends on the free space in those aggregates.
- For example:
- Bucket size: 90TB
- Aggregates:
- aggr1: 33TB free
- aggr2: 34TB free
- Total available space: 77TB
- This explains why the volume shows only 77TB instead of the full 90TB.
- The volume size reflects the actual usable capacity across the aggregates, not just the bucket configuration.
