Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • SMB3.1 (SMB encryption)

Issue

  • Windows Server 2025 clients are unable to access or experience significant delays when attempting to connect to CIFS/SMB shares on ONTAP systems if SMB encryption is enabled on the client but not required on the CIFS server or CIFS share
  • The connection may hang for a long time or fail with errors.
  • Access works as expected with Windows Server 2016/2019/2022 clients.
  • If SMB encryption is explicitly required on the ONTAP share, the connection is established immediately
  • If SMB encryption is disabled on both client and share, the connection is also immediate
