Answer

Files can time out during virus scans for several reasons:

  • Complex or deeply nested compressed/archive files

    • Deeply nested files require extensive decompression, which can lead to timeouts.
  • Files in use or locked by other processes

    • If another process is using or locking a file, the virus scanner may not access it, resulting in a timeout.
  • Extremely large files

    • Scanning large files can take significant time, potentially causing timeouts.
  • Network access delays or high I/O load

    • Network latency or high I/O load can slow down file access, leading to timeouts.
