Why are CIFS share permissions different between File Explorer and System Manager?
Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- CIFS
Answer
- Permissions viewed in File explorer (via the security tab in the properties) show the permissions at the file/folder level
- Permissions viewed in System Manager for the share reflect a different set of "share permissions"
- Both permissions are applied when a user accesses data on a share
- If there's a conflict between the permissions, the user will be granted the most restrictive access between the two
Additional Information
- Generally, share permissions can only be modified from ONTAP (System Manager or CLI) or from the MMC utility
- Generally, file/folder permissions can only be modified from Windows CIFS clients accessing the shares
