Issue

A user is unable to remove the $RECYCLE.BIN folder from a CIFS share on a NetApp AFF-A400 system. Attempts to delete the folder using standard methods (Windows Explorer, administrator account, and third-party tools like filewalk) are unsuccessful. The folder is present but has Windows attributes set to hidden and system.

Relevant log output and details:

  • Symptom: Unable to remove $recycling folder from CIFS Share
  • Folder attributes: Hidden and System set (confirmed via vserver cifs share file-directory show)
  • Attempts to delete via filewalk (admin account) failed
  • Customer impact: Unable to remove folder containing old data, resulting in compliance issues
