Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • CIFS/SMB
  • MacOS clients

Issue

  • When accessing CIFS/SMB shares hosted on NetApp ONTAP, symlinks created on the share work correctly for Windows clients
  • However, MacOS clients can see and enter the symlink directory, but the directory appears empty, no files are visible
  • Direct access to the target directory of the symlink (not via the symlink) displays files as expected
  • From packet trace analysis:
CreateResponseFile:_IGD;FindResponse,Error:STATUS_NO_SUCH_FILE;CloseResponse
CreateResponse,Error:STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND;ReadResponse,Error:STATUS_OBJECT_NAME_NOT_FOUND
CreateResponse,Error:STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED;GetInfoResponse,Error:STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
CreateResponse,Error:STATUS_PATH_NOT_COVERED;GetInfoResponse,Error:STATUS_PATH_NOT_COVERED
