Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • CIFS
  • NFS

Issue

  • The CIFS share or NFS export is normally accessed by routing to a remote LIF on the SVM
  • After creating a new LIF for the SVM on the client's local subnet, the SVM becomes inaccessible via the remote LIF

For example:

  • Consider that there are two lifs on vserver as below:

cluster1::> net int show -vserver SVM1
  (network interface show)
Logical    Status     Network            Current       Current Is
Vserver     Interface  Admin/Oper Address/Mask       Node          Port    Home
----------- ---------- ---------- ------------------ ------------- ------- ----
SVM1
            lif1         up/up    10.80.70.150/24     node1
                                                                    e0c     true
            lif2         up/up  10.80.96.11/24        node1
                                                                    e0c     true

  • Also consider a client with IP 10.80.70.92 in same subnet as 'lif1' is as shown above
  • If the client sends a request to 'lif2', the response will be sent via the port hosting 'lif1' because it represents the most direct route to the client (i.e. no routing required)
