Is disruptive changing the LIF's netmask?
Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- Networking
- CIFS
- NFS
Answer
- Regardless of whether the customer is using CIFS or NFS, changing the LIF's netmask can potentially cause disruption to clients.
- It depends on how the network and clients are configured.
Additional Information
- If there are any clients or devices within the current subnet range /26 that have IP addresses outside the new subnet range /25, they may experience connectivity issues until their IP addresses are updated to fall within the new subnet range.
- Clients that have IP addresses within the new subnet range should not be affected.
- Below points to be considered:
- How users are accessing the shares, is it via FQDN or IP ?
- If users are accessing via FQDN, then that FQDN is pointing to how many IPs?
- If it points to multiple IPs, then remove the older which will be modified from the DNS and add the new IP to the DNS
NOTE:
- Before making any changes, it's highly recommended to plan a maintenance window and communicate with affected clients to minimize disruption.
