How does inbound traffic pathing is being determined?
Applies to
- ONTAP 9
- Switch
Answer
- Pathing for inbound traffic is being determined by the switch, not by a client (e.g. Cisco, not ESXi)
- The switch will reference whatever distribution function it utilizes for its port channel to determine what link to transmit the traffic across
- Given the distribution function, all traffic for a given port tuple or IP address will use the same link, and it will essentially be random, so the likelihood of even distribution of traffic increases as the number of unique distributions increases
- In a port-based distribution, the more connections exist between different source/destination ports, the more even the distribution is likely to be
- In an IP-based distribution, it would be required to increase the number of actual client IPs that are accessing the system, in order to increase that same probability of even distribution
