FlexCache “flexcache.revoke.csm.failure” Errors After ONTAP Upgrade

  • NetApp ONTAP 9.18.1P6 (Cluster-Mode)
  • AFF-C800
  • FlexCache deployments using CIFS/SMB
  • Environments with LDAP disabled and Active Directory authentication

Issue

After upgrading to ONTAP 9.18.1P6 and associated firmware, customers observed persistent EMS log errors similar to:

[CSM_BTLS:flexcache.revoke.csm.failure:error]: FlexCache origin volume failed to revoke cached data from FlexCache volume ... due to a CSM communication error. Revoke operation type: 1.

Additional related errors:

[secd:secd.conn.auth.failure:notice]: Vserver(<SVM>) could not authenticate over the network to server (<DC>). Error: Can't contact LDAP server (Service: LDAP (NIS & NameMapping), Operation: CheckLDAPConfig).

Symptoms:

  • FlexCache volumes unable to revoke cached data from origin.
  • Errors seen across multiple nodes and clusters.
  • Errors began immediately after ONTAP and firmware upgrade.
  • LDAP had been disabled; only CIFS/SMB with Active Directory was in use.
  • FlexCache and CIFS/SMB access were proactively disabled to prevent user impact; no end-user outages reported.
