Files on CIFS share open slowly because oplocks are disabled

Issue

  • Opening files takes significantly longer than expected
  • Certain CIFS shares may be impacted while others appear normal / no impact
    • In some cases, problem occurs on VPN connection, but not local network connection
    • In some cases, specific file types are more severely impacted
      • Example: xlsb, pptx, xlsx, docx
    • In some cases, specific client applications are more severely impacted
      • Example: Alteryx, Outlook
  • Client is sending many small operations instead of large contiguous requests
    • This can be validated via packet trace
      • Client is requesting very short read lengths
      • Client is re-reading previously-read offsets
  • Latency analysis finds no abnormal volume or protocol latency
