Failure to open or delete files with long names in ONTAP

Issue

  • Files with long paths/names cannot be opened or deleted
  • Restoring Files with long paths/name from snapshot fails
  • Error:

The source file name(s) are larger than is supported by the file system. Try moving to a location which has a shorter path name, or try renaming to shorter name(s) before attempting this operation.

The file name is too long.

Also:

  • File copy is not supported due to a long name
  • unsupported file name
  • Error message: The specified path, file name, or both are too long. The fully qualified file name must be less than 260 characters, and the directory name must be less than 248 characters.
