NFSv4.2 sparse files and space reservation support

The NFSv4.2 client is able to reserve space for a sparse file. Space can also be deallocated and unreserved from a file.
  • Please note: ONTAP support full file deallocate, not partial deallocates

  • Successive ONTAP releases expand support for NFSv4.2 optional features.

  • NFSv4.2 provides the ALLOCATE operation, which allows clients to pre-allocate disk space for a file without actually writing data to it.
  • This helps reduce fragmentation and ensures space availability, allowing for efficient management of sparse files
