Cannot access NFS from ESXi after service disruption

Issue

After a system crash that disrupts NFS access between ONTAP and ESXi, the ESXi host fails to reconnect to the NFS storage. You may see errors like the following while trying to clean up the ESXi environment:
 
Cannot Unmount volume <volume name> because one or more virtual machines are still registered on it. Correct the problem and retry the operation
