Application times-out or fails due to client terminating CIFS session

Issue

  • Commvault Simpana backup times out after upgrading to ONTAP 9.5 with the following errors
[DM_BASE    ] Failed to get a media to write the backup data
Windows Error [64], so failing the operation
  • The following events can be seen on the client's event log
Microsoft-Windows-SMBClient 30805    None     "The client lost its session to the server."
  • A perfstat or performance archive shows a performance bottleneck

  • Packet traces show that

    • The storage controller is not granting further credits

    • The client resetting the underlying TCP session

    • No evidence of an actual smb2 command outstanding for more than 60 seconds
