SMB copy delays over WAN through Rich Copy Tool

  • CIFS/SMB shares
  • Environments with source and destination shares on different clusters/sites connected by WAN
  • Large small-file datasets (e.g., application data migration)
  • Copy tools: Windows File Explorer, RichCopy.

Issue

  • Copying data between two NetApp CIFS shares over a WAN link is significantly slower than expected, especially for datasets containing tens of thousands of small files.
  • Storage performance is normal (low ONTAP latency, QoS and archive metrics healthy).
