How to disable or modify cache settings for a FlexVol resident on a Flash Pool

Flash Pool is an aggregate that includes both HDD and SDD RAID groups. On a per volume basis, it is possible to modify the cache settings, including disabling them. Normally, the default settings are appropriate, but there are situations where it might be required to modify the settings. Examples might include:

  • The Flash Pool capacity is too small, resulting in a lot of inserts and destage work and a low hit rate. In this situation, disabling volumes from caching to better align to the Flash Pool capacity will improve cache quality and reduce cache churn.
  • A specific volume is known to receive a high level of random read requests once, and then all data will be sequentially overwritten. In this case, disabling caching would improve cache quality and reduce churn.
  • An application is known to re-read recently written data and there is a requirement for that data to be cached. In this case, client response time could be reduced by caching this data.
  • An application is known to have a very large working set size with a lot of random reads but has low IO requirements. In this case, disabling caching would improve cache quality and reduce churn.
