Why is the size of my directory object larger after copied to a new location

Answer

  • ONTAP does not compact directories
  • This means that the memory allocation for a directory is small to start with, and grows as the contents of the directory add new entries to the directory object
  • File Deletions inside of the object will NOT remove or reduce the size of the directory object
  • Each directory object is started from 4096 bytes (1 block) and the size allocation will only increase
