  • ONTAP 9
  • Volumes using SnapMirror and Anti‑ransomware (ARP)
  • Snapshot policies with frequent schedules

Answer

Snapshot overflow usage can be reduced by the following actions:
  1. Review Snapshot retention
    • Reduce Snapshot generation counts in the Snapshot policy (for example, daily backups).
    • SnapMirror (snapmirror.*) and ARP (Anti_ransomware_backup.*) Snapshots should not be manually deleted.
  2. Delete unnecessary Snapshots
    • Remove old, non‑SnapMirror and non‑ARP Snapshots after retention changes.
  3. Enable volume autosize
    • Enable autosize (grow mode) to prevent the volume from filling due to Snapshot growth.
    • Ensure sufficient free space is available in the aggregate.
These steps help control Snapshot growth and prevent Snapshot overflow conditions.
