What are the Best Practices around the combined deployment of both Flash Cache and Flash Pool on the same controller?

Answer

  • Before ONTAP 9.0, the recommendation is simple: It is  exclusive. Such as if deploying HYA aggrs, do not need a Flash Cache.
  • ONTAP 9.0 later opened the door to the deployment of both on the same controller.
    • There may be a small fraction of workloads that will benefit from having both FC+FP. The exact nature of such workloads is not entirely clear. Your mileage will vary so test before you commit.
