Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • Network Time Protocol (NTP)

Issue

  • An attempt to add an NTP server to the cluster fails with the following error:

::> cluster time-service ntp server create -server 10.xx.xx.1
Error: Unable to query NTP server "10.xx.xx.1" with address 10.xx.xx.1 within 5 seconds.

  • The node-mgmt LIFs of the nodes can ping the NTP server successfully:

::> network ping -lif-owner Cluster1 -lif Cluster1-01_mgmt1 -destination 10.xx.xx.1
10.xx.xx.1 is alive

::> network ping -lif-owner Cluster1 -lif Cluster1-02_mgmt1 -destination 10.xx.xx.1
10.xx.xx.1 is alive

  •  Packet trace captured on the management port of the nodes indicates that there is no response from the NTP server for the packets sent by node-mgmt LIFs:

Node-mgmt IP:  10.xx.xx.6
NTP server IP: 10.xx.xx.1
