Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • Current configuration:

    • The failover policy for the management interface (e.g., mgmt1) is set to local-only.
    • Both e0M and a0a on the same node are specified as failover targets.
    • Due to the network design, only e0M is accessible for management. If failover occurs to a0a, management access will be lost.

Answer

  • Do not disable the failover policy unless there is a specific, intentional reason.
  • Instead, keep the failover policy as local-only and configure the failover group so that only e0M is specified as the failover target.
  • This ensures that management access remains available in the event of a failover and avoids the risk of failing over to an unreachable interface.

Additional Information

See NetApp KB: Network interface failover policies behavior and uses for more details. The documentation advises against disabling failover unless it is intentionally required.
