Excessive inode usage on volume due to client application misbehaving

Issue

A Volume containing several qtrees configured for CIFS is suddenly reporting it's running out of inodes:
 
[Node-01: wafl_exempt01: wafl.vol.runningOutOfInodes:error]: The file system on "Volume Vol1@vserver:xxx-xxx-xxxx" is using 80 percent or more of the files in public inode space that can be contained on the volume.
