Issue

Experienced data unavailability in two-node ONTAP clusters where nodes failed to takeover due to the timing of the failure:

  • The HA interconnect (HAIC) times out and disables takeover (15-17 seconds)
  • The mediator mailbox updates continue working during this timeout period
  • Since nodes can still see partner heartbeat updates, no takeover occurs
  • When network isolation completes, the surviving node loses quorum and shuts down data services to protect data integrity
