Issue

Purpose
Explain why “max directory size” warnings may not appear after files are deleted from a directory that previously reached its maximum size, and clarify the expected behavior in ONTAP
Applies To
All platforms and volumes where directories may grow large
Symptoms

  • A directory previously hit the maximum directory size limit.
  • Files are deleted from that directory.
  • New files can be created again in the directory (reusing freed slots).
  • No “approaching max” or “max reached” directory-size warnings are observed during this reuse period.
  • Warnings only appear during an attempted growth event (allocation of a new directory block).
