SnapMirror active sync out of sync, Mediator unreachable, LUNs unavailable

Applies to

  • ONTAP 9.15.x
  • SnapMirror Active Sync (SM‑AS; formerly SnapMirror Business Continuity, SM‑BC)
  • VMware vSphere/ESXi using ONTAP LUNs as datastores

Issue

  • During a disaster recovery (DR) test, SnapMirror active sync relationships transitioned out of sync and into awaiting-consensus.
  • ONTAP event log reported Mediator unreachable:

Sat Oct 18 15:22:34 +0200 [Node-01:mgwd:sm.mediator.unreachable:alert]: ONTAP Mediator (IP: 11.66.214.79) is unreachable from cluster C250B.

  • SnapMirror relationship states showed out-of-sync and awaiting-consensus.
  • LUNs were not accessible from either site
  • VMware datastores/LUNs appeared unmapped or not visible to ESXi.
