Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • NDMP Restore (non-DAR, out-of-place)
  • In-Direct Topology
  • DMA: EMC Networker

Issue

  • NDMP restore is very slow even though there are no errors in the DMA and the NetApp NDMP logs.
  • Reviewing the BACKUP.GZ logs, phases 1 and 2 are the bottleneck.

rst ... Log_msg (Phase 1 total time (sec): 117548

rst ... Log_msg (Phase 2 total time (sec): 245150

rst ... End (31578032 files, 1943817 MB processed, 357 MB skipped, 395910 secs, 4 MBps)

  • The directory structure is dense (deeply nested up to 8-9 levels). The amount of time that we have spent in lookups of the inomap mapfile is very high.

rst ... Log_msg (VM inomap  : wait_time (sec) (77353), lookup_time (sec) (303568))

rst ... Log_msg (VM dirmap  : wait_time (sec) (113369), lookup_time (sec) (219604))
