Applies to

  • ONTAP 9
  • NDMP

Answer

  • No, you cannot set up a direct connection from the Storage Pool to ONTAP.
  • We do not support direct connection to DataDomain when configured as a disk pool.
  • To use disk media, such as a DataDomain storage pool, a Data Management Application (DMA) is required.
  • The DMA is connected to the disk storage, and the DMA manages writing and reading backup images on the disk storage.

Additional Information

  • NetApp NDMP supports SAN connection to serial tape devices / robotic tape libraries, and can back up and restore directly from tape media.
  • NetApp NDMP does not support backup and restore to local or SAN-attached disk media.
  • When disk storage is used with NetApp NDMP, the NDMP topology cannot be local as it is with tape devices.
  • When NetApp NDMP uses disk storage for backup and restore, the NDMP topology can only be remote / indirect / 2-way.
  • When disk storage is used for NDMP backup or restore with NetApp, the NDMP Server on the NetApp cluster sends the data stream over the IP network to the DMA, and the DMA writes the data stream to its own disk storage.
  • For restores, the DMA reads the backup images from its disk storage, and sends the data stream over the IP network to the NetApp NDMP Server, and the NDMP Server calls restore to write the data stream to a volume.
