Answer

The Trident ports listed under the "Reference" section of the documentation are the ports that the trident-controller pod is listening on for communication from the daemonset pods running on each node.

Port      Purpose
8443    Backchannel HTTPS
8000    Trident REST server
17546   Liveness/readiness probe port used by Trident daemonset pods

The Prometheus metrics endpoint is there for those who choose to set up Prometheus in their environments to monitor their Trident installation.  This is optional and the steps to set it up are documented in the "Monitor Trident" section of the documentation.
