Pod can't attach a volume and getting a multiattach error

Issue

Pod can't properly attach a Trident volume and getting the error below, in the description of the events for the pod:

Normal   Scheduled           xmys                default-scheduler        Successfully assigned pod1/volume1 to hostname.corporate.com
Warning  FailedAttachVolume  xmys                attachdetach-controller  Multi-Attach error for volume "pvc-xxxxxxxx-yyyy-zzzz-xxxx-xyxyxyxyxyxyxy" Volume is already exclusively attached to one node and can't be attached to another
Warning  FailedMount         10s   kubelet                  Unable to attach or mount volumes: unmounted volumes=[volume1], unattached volumes=[volume1], failed to process volumes=[]: timed out waiting for the condition
